How to awaken the interest of girls in scientific subjects and help young researchers in their careers. And furthermore: what can woman contribute to the development of humanity and what could be done to achieve gender equality in the world of science. These were some of the themes discussed during the debate “Women, science and sustainable development”, which took place today at Expo Milano 2015. At the meeting, organised by Aspen Institute Italy as part of the initiatives for the Women’s Weeks, three extraordinary women came together: Cristina Alberini, neurobiologist of the Center for Neural Science (New York University), known for her research that has opened new frontiers in the battle against Alzheimer’s, Cristina Scocchia, CEO of L’Oréal Italy and Emma Bonino, president of Women for Expo. “Women are very attracted to science, but they are scared of not making it - observed Cristina Alberini -. We need women who set a good example, talking to young girls, and employing them in laboratories to train them. But most of all, what we need are fair policies: the rules are made by people who make decisions, that is by men, while the women adapt”. “Women are made to think about nutrition - continued the neurobiologist - but they are underrepresented, especially in developing Countries, even if it is there that specific themes linked to nutrition can be identified”. “For many years, L’Oréal has worked to support women in science - emphasised Cristina Scocchia -. As part of our programme "For women in science" we awarded 2,000 scholarships to women scientists under 35 years old all over the world, enabling many girls to make progress along their career paths”. “Young girls are falling out of love with the sciences - added Scocchia -, because of the many stereotypes that are scaring them away.” “Talking about women and science - stated Emma Bonino - I hope we will manage to have Women for Expo as a structural project of all the Universal Expositions, taking it first to Astana in 2017 and to the event in Dubai scheduled for 2020, where the theme will be Connecting Minds, Creating the Future. At Women for Expo we have set ourselves an ambitious objective and I hope it will be accepted by Bie”.
