Nissan e.dams competes in the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge first test session
Yokohama, Japan – The Nissan e.dams team scored a solid top ten finish in today's ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge esports test session at the Formula E Monaco street circuit.
With the live Formula E racing season suspended, Nissan e.dams will participate in the nine-week esports competition that features teams and drivers from the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, as well as a selection of top gamers.
The new online racing series draws parallels between Formula E as the pinnacle of Zero Emission racing in the real world, which is now Zero Emissions through virtual racing. This aligns with Nissan's goal of Emissions and Zero Fatalities - an important pillar of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision - the brand's vision for changing how cars are driven, powered and integrated into society.
The ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge will raise funds that will contribute to UNICEF's global coronavirus appeal. Nissan e.dams supports Formula E's fundraising partnership with UNICEF that aims to keep children around the world safe, healthy and learning in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
The test session today utilizing rFactor 2 simulator software, enabled teams and drivers to acclimatize to esports competition, check equipment, and develop preparations for the inaugural race next Saturday, April 25, where points will be awarded.
Points are then accumulated over the consecutive race weekends contributing to the overall team'sstandings in the run-up to the Grand Final on June 13. The virtual points will not count towards the all-electric street racing ABB FIA Formula E Championship, which plans to resume later in the year.
The ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge is split into two grids and two races; the Driver Grid made up of Formula E racers, and the Challenge Grid of gamers.
Racing for the Nissan e.dams team today on the Formula E Driver Grid were Oliver Rowland, team driver, and Jann Mardenborough, team simulator driver. Mardenborough substituted Nissan e.dams Formula E team driver, Sebastien Buemi for this first test session. Buemi will join the virtual racing action for the first race.
Representing Nissan e.dams on the Challenge Grid were two winning Nissan GT Academy gamers-to-racers, Ricardo Sanchez (MEX), 30, Winner (International), GT Academy 2014 Zero, and Marc Gassner (GER), 29, Winner (Germany), GT Academy 2014.
TEST SESSION RESULTS OVERVIEW
The first action of the day was qualifying for the Challenge Grid drivers, with Marc Gassner taking an impressive second on the grid. Gassner went on to score a podium, finishing P3 in the race. Ricardo Sanchez had a challenging qualifying and race, using the rFactor 2 platform for the first time.
The action continued almost immediately with the Formula E Drivers Grid qualifying session. The Nissan e.dams pairing of Oliver Rowland and Jann Mardenborough took P7 and P11 on the grid, respectively.
After an intense 15 minutes of racing, Rowland crossed the line in P6 and Mardenborough in P9, with some exciting inter-team wheel-to-wheel racing on the later laps.

Race at Home Challenge online racing series'. Where Oliver will be re-joined by team mate Sebastien Buemi at the Hong Kong Formula E circuit.
