Safety applications under control – New Industrial Security Appliance and firmware functions for industrial use

Siemens is expanding its range of Scalance SC-600 Industrial Security Appliances to include a new Scalance SC622-2C and is also adding functionality with a new firmware version for all Scalance SC-600. The new Scalance SC622-2C for protecting networks and industrial communication offers two copper ports with a data rate of 10, 100 and 1000 megabits per second (Mbps). It also features a fiber optic port with 1000 Mbps for connection to the internal and external network. As well as security functions such as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and firewall, the device also has hardware-isolated ports and adapted firmware for the error-free connection of safety systems to the production network.
Especially in the last few weeks, it has become very clear, digitalization is more important than ever in both the private and the industrial sphere. The challenge for Internet Service Providers (ISP) is to design their networks more powerful and more stable and to equip them with appropriate network servers. In addition, Information Technology (IT) administrators must increase capacity in the company. The aim is that as many employees as possible around the world should be able to access the internal company network without compromising data security. This goal is supported by Scalance SC-600 Industrial Security Appliances from #siemens. They protect industrial networks and automation systems by segmenting the network and establishing secure communication channels.
Special solution for safety concepts
Particularly sensitive areas, such as those in production networks, require special protection. This includes plants with functional safety. On the one hand, they must be placed in the safe state in the event of an error, but on the other hand they should not be stopped without good reason. With the Scalance SC622-2C, #siemens presents a device that is specifically designed for use in safety solutions.
Reliable production through specific maintenance
Identically structured system parts, which use the same safety addresses internally, can be safely connected to the production network via a Scalance SC622-2C without affecting one another. The Scalance SC622-2C features hardware-separated ports (Ethernet ports), which prevents communication between safety systems. This means that identical machine addressing can still be used. With the Scalance SC622-2C network component, a firmware update is also released for all Scalance SC-600 devices. One new feature is the configuration of bandwidth limits for firewall rules, which can be used to increase performance in the protected network. To ensure that production processes are not interrupted and to plan specific maintenance, the Scalance SC-600 Industrial Security Appliances now also include the “Scheduled Restart” function. This supports the scheduled restart of devices when required. Another important new function in the Scalance SC642-2C/646-2C is the bridge tunnel, which can now be used for the secure (tunneled) transmission of Layer 2 communication. In addition to functional changes, the new firmware version ensures that all Industrial Security devices conform with Profinet classification CC-A. Profinet (Process Field Network) is an open Industrial Ethernet standard. The CC-A classification uses the infrastructure of an existing Ethernet network and integrates basic Profinet functionality.
Data security in focus
With “Defense in Depth”, #siemens offers a versatile concept, which protects plants comprehensively and in depth. The concept is based on plant security, network security and system integrity in accordance with standard IEC 62443, the leading standard for security in industrial automation. #siemens was the first company to gain IEC 62443-4-1-based TÜV SÜD certification for the whole development process of #siemens products for automation and drive technology, including industrial software. With Scalance X managed Layer 2 Industrial Ethernet switches, #siemens now offers the first products certified to
IEC 62443-4-2.
