Lavoriamo insieme per abbattere i pregiudizi. #BreaktheBias

A message from #lauramiele, Chief Operating Officer

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #BreakTheBias, which explores how deliberate or unconscious biases make it difficult for women to move ahead in many areas of life, including the workplace, school, and community. This theme is a call to action. Knowing bias exists isn’t enough; we must all actively challenge gender bias, discrimination, and stereotyping each time we see it.

When I began my career in gaming more than 26 years ago, there were a lot of biases about this industry. #people had a picture of what a “gamer” was, and it wasn’t a young woman in her 20s. I was often asked, “did your brother play video games? Is that how you got into it?”

Two and half decades later, things have changed. Close to half of all gamers worldwide are female, and it’s inspiring to see so many women across numerous intersections of diversity choosing to build their careers in the games industry and specifically here at Electronic Arts. When I look at my career, I am proudest of the steps we have taken together as a community at EA to create an inclusive environment. We aren’t perfect, and this is work that is ‘in progress,’ constantly evolving and improving. Candidly, it probably always will be.

In an industry that is still predominantly male, one of the keys to this work is engaging our male colleagues and working together to actively address gender inequities. To give you an idea of just how important this partnership is, according to the consulting firm BCG, data shows that when men are actively involved in gender diversity, 96% of companies report progress. However, only 30% of companies improve when men aren't involved. The data tells us what many of us have experienced: allyship is one of the most impactful tools we have to make real cultural change.

I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible male allies throughout my career, and I’ve had some of these men tell me they want to be an ally, but they are afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing, so they stay silent. We can’t afford this silence. So to these allies- I want to remind you that we are all human, and there are times when we don’t know the best way to show up. That’s ok. What’s important is you show up, keep trying to do better, and stay engaged.

As humans, we learn to be human from each other. It’s a philosophy called Ubuntu that recognizes the importance of the impact of the group, community, or person in our lives. Our collective potential is determined by how we show up, how we learn from each other, and how we can be better together. We have to be intentional in bringing more women into our industry. We can’t ever forget the impact each of us individually has on this work. When we call out bad behavior and offer up words of encouragement, we raise each other up and shape a more robust community that encourages #people to do the right thing and responds with grace when we do get something quite right. This is how we #breakthebias.
