AMD FSR 3.1 Announced at GDC 2024, FSR 3 Available and Upcoming in 40 Games

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

Last September, we unleashed AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3)1 on the gaming world, delivering massive FPS improvements in supported games. AMD FSR 3 is the latest version of our cutting-edge open upscaling technology – adding advanced frame generation technology for significant framerate boosts in supported games2 and a new “Native AA” quality mode for enhanced image quality, all supported across a wide range of graphics cards, from both AMD and other vendors.

Following the launch of AMD FSR 3 and the first two supported games, Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum™, we released the source code for developers on GPUOpen in December 2023, including updates that added support for variable refresh rate (VRR) technology like AMD FreeSync™ and improvements to FSR 3 frame pacing for a more fluid gaming experience when frame generation is enabled. The first game to be released with this improved version of FSR 3 was Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora™.

Since the start of 2024, we have seen a rapid acceleration in the adoption of AMD FSR 3 in games, with some amazing titles launching and being updated with FSR 3, such as Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Starfield, The Last of Us™ Part I, and many more. That brings us to a total of 40 available and upcoming FSR 3 games (as of March 20, 2024) in just the first six months since its release. Now at GDC 2024, we have just announced AMD FSR 3.1, which is the latest update to our open upscaling and advanced frame generation technology. Read-on to learn more about it.

Introducing AMD FSR 3.1 with Improved Upscaling Quality

Announced today at our GDC 2024 “High Performance Rendering in Snowdrop Using AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3)” presentation, AMD FSR 3.1 will have some significant improvements, new capabilities, and updates:

  • Upscaling image quality improvements:
    • Improved temporal stability at rest and in movement – less flickering and/or shimmering and “Fizziness” around objects in motion.
    • Ghosting reduction and better preservation of detail.
  • Decoupling FSR 3 upscaling from frame generation:
    • Allows FSR 3.1 frame generation technology to work with other upscaling solutions.
  • New AMD FidelityFX API:
    • Makes it easier for developers to debug and allows forward compatibility with updated versions of FSR.
  • Vulkan® and Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK) support.

AMD FSR 3.1 will be available for developers on GPUOpen in Q2 and will be coming to games later this year.

AMD FSR 3.1 Upscaling Quality Improvement Examples

The first announced game to be getting AMD FSR 3.1 is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart from Insomniac Games, Nixxes Software, and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game update will add all the goodness of FSR 3.1, including decoupling frame generation from upscaling, so it can be used with the other upscaling solutions the game supports, and improvements to FSR temporal upscaling image quality. Below you can see examples from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart that show some of the upscaling improvements of FSR 3.1.

These GIF examples were taken from video captures of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart running at 1080p using AMD FSR 2.2/3.1 Performance mode.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be getting FSR 3.1 in a game update coming in later this year.

Recommendations for AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation Use

As we’ve indicated in previous AMD FSR 3 materials, when using FSR 3 Frame Generation with any upscaling quality mode OR with the new “Native AA” mode, it is highly recommended to be always running at a minimum of ~60 FPS before Frame Generation is applied for an optimal high-quality gaming experience and to mitigate any latency introduced by the technology. Consequently, we suggest you adjust a supported game’s graphic settings, resolution, and FSR upscaling quality mode to help achieve this.

When using FSR 3 with a VRR display, we suggest that you keep your framerate (with frame generation enabled) within your monitor’s refresh range to prevent screen tearing. To ensure this, you may want to try the game's built in frame limiter or use V-Sync, though that may introduce latency and subjectively observable judder.

We also recommend that Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) is enabled in Windows® 11 under Settings -> System -> Display -> Graphics Settings when using AMD FSR 3. HAGS is enabled in Windows 11 2022 Update on AMD Radeon™ RX 7900/7800/7700 Series Graphics Cards when using AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition™ 23.12.1 or higher.

AMD FSR 3 Now Available and Upcoming in 40 Games

When we launched AMD FSR 3 in September 2023, it was available in two games, Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum™, with an additional 10 games announced as upcoming titles. Now, six months later, we have an incredible 40 available and upcoming games with support for FSR 3. The adoption rate of FSR 3 into game has been rapidly accelerating since the start of 2024, and some of the key titles to launch with or add FSR 3 over the recent months are Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora™, Farming Simulator 22, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, REMNANT II®, Starfield, The Last of Us™ Part I, and The Thaumaturge. You can see the complete list of 19 supported game titles below (as of March 20, 2024).

On top of the currently supported games, there are 21 exciting upcoming games get FSR 3 soon (as of March 20, 2024), including Cyberpunk 2077, Dragon's Dogma 2, Dying Light 2 Stay Human, Frostpunk 2, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.
